Thrust!

34 East 51st Street

Manhattan, NY

In Japan, stone gardens are intended to be contemplative reflections of the natural world. They embody of the world view of the people who made them in medieval and early modern Japan.

Thrust! is a stone garden made using the same simple palette of materials as traditional gardens but it incorporates a contemporary understanding of nature: tectonic plate movement.

The incredible pressure and movement of tectonic plates as they slide around the surface of the earth is all but invisible to us except in those places where they collide and thrust upwards in the form of mountains.

The garden is in the lobby courtyard of a new boutique commercial building at 34 East 51st Street designed by SOM. The interior design is by Rottet Studio.
