Spiral Garden

スパイラル・ガーデン

Koshihata Residence

Kyôto, Japan

This garden was built within the oldest extant residence in Kyoto City, dating back to 1657. It is a contemporary contemplation garden meant to be enjoyed from the nearby rooms and verandas. The central feature is a spiral hillock of moss set in a field of raked white sand that symbolizes an essential quality of the natural world: that it is continually in motion and filled with an ever-changing energy.
