| Completed in the Spring of 1992, Awa-no sato is a private park built for a confectionery company on the island of Shikoku, Japan. In the process of building a new factory, the company decided to create a small park along side as well. This would act as a rest spot for the many people who come to tour the facility (they had 200,000 visitors in the first nine months of operations). The five acre site was divided into three zones; the factory and its service area, a 2,500 m2 plaza for parking and/or special events, and the park itself. The park contains various gardens as well as three 200 year-old farmhouses, reassembled on site, that have become restaurants . In order to link the various diverse elements of the project -- farmhouses to factory -- hand-hewn granite was chosen as a basic linking element. 2,400 tons of the red-brown stone were brought from Qingdao, China and used to make the plaza, garden paths, retaining walls, moat and building foundations. |
