Completed in the late Autumn of 1990, this dual garden was designed for a father and his eldest son who had built a new house in order to live together, as is still customary in Japan. The son wanted his half of the garden Western and modern, and the father wanted his traditionally Japanese. The challenge was to connect the two sides spiritually while at the same time dividing them for privacy. The serpentine rammed-earth wall that was built between them, being made of a traditional material (soil) and yet feeling somewhat modern, works from both sides and acts to link as well as divide. The two gardens vary in their use as well as aesthetic. One is meant to go out into and the other to view from the comfort of the veranda.
