Photographs by Haruo Hirota
| Completed in the Spring of 1988, this contemplation garden is in Kyoto City's oldest extant residence. The simplicity of palette and the wave-like form of the garden are intended to instill in the viewer a restful, contemplative mood. Inspired by the calm felt at the seashore, the spiral of moss, raked sand and the undulating ground plane recreate the rythmic motion of the ocean without having any real motion themselves. The black wall in the rear of the garden acts as a neutral element that links the garden in the foreground with the view of the mountains beyond. |
