•••many of my ceramics are made by coating meadow grasses or leaves with clay and forming them into shapes evocative of nests or coccons, thus the name "fiber-ceramics." the resulting artwork feels at once very ancient and very modern — organic and natural but also intentionally sculptural. •••in many ways these ceramics are based on the traditions of Japan, where I lived for 18 years, in particular the techniques by which raw unglazed works are fired in wood kilns. it is the seredipitous effects of fire on clay that I am seeking.
